With older versions of Windows, you can download a free tool from Microsoft to display more font properties provided by the font designer. So how do you find out if a font is embeddable? In Windows 7, you could just right-click on the font file, select Properties then go to the Details tab.
Restricted - Font cannot be embedded in a document. Print and Preview Only - Allows fonts to be embedded in the document but only installs fonts temporarily in the system for printing purposes. Editable - Allows fonts to be embedded in the document but only installs fonts temporarily in the system. Installable - Allows fonts to be embedded in the document and installed permanently in the computer. There are four permissions of font embeddability – installable, editable, print/preview and restricted. To identify the type of font, whether it is Postscript, Open Type or TrueType, just right click on the font file located in the Fonts folder in the Control Panel and select Properties.įiguring out if a font is embeddable is another issue. Microsoft Word allows you to embed fonts in your document, however, the fonts must be TrueType fonts and available for embedding. The worst thing that could happen is that your text may be unreadable with symbols and boxes substituting characters. This affects the layout and formatting of the document, so the number of pages might not be the same as the original and line and page breaks will not be where you intended them to be. If you share your documents with others and they don't have the same fonts on their system, Microsoft Word will substitute your font with another.

(I'm still not sure how this happened as I've used Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat Pro with zero issues for years I'm not sure how the setting got changed.) I hope this helps others who may face this issue now and in the future.The fonts you use in a document determine how that document appears when viewed or printed. This method fixed the appearance of fonts in my PDFs. I've included a screengrab of the Preferences window below. Hopefully, your document fonts, images, etc, should look identical to the way they appear in your Word doc.

It’s now June 2020 and judging from many communities, boards and discussion threads the issue of why Microsoft Word seems to convert to low-quality Adobe Acrobat PDFs seems to still plague a lot of people.
